3rd Year Medic

I joined HIHS to learn more about inclusion health and to advocate for vulnerable groups in our society who often suffer from the worst health outcomes. I hope to raise awareness about this issue among the student population and educate on the role they can play in addressing local inequalities.

PhD 4th Year

In my Ph.D. I look at using data science tools to improve the prevention of homelessness for individuals suffering from mental health and substance use disorders. I'm passionate about making a difference for those most vulnerable in our society. Joining the club gives me a chance to volunteer, step away from the numbers on my screen and get closer to the people behind the problem.

I think there is a huge need for increased social awareness in medicine. I developed an interest in inclusion health during my intercalated degree in Bioethics and Law, when I did my dissertation on women’s health in prisons. Marginalised groups have some of the worst health outcomes and I believe that we as students should all have a drive to change this and ensure that everyone can access good quality healthcare, no matter what their situation or background.

5th Year Medic

I started learning about inclusion health in my 2nd year and from there my interest started to grow. The society has provided a great space for students to hear from a wide community of people and get involved with different programmes. I volunteered with the Cyrenians because of HIHS and was really keen to join the committee this year to help get other students involved!

I was keen to join HIHS as its premise and values align with my longstanding interest in the social determinants of health. I have previously explored these through intercalating in the Anthropology and Sociology of Medicine, with my dissertation research based around the marginalisation of prison populations and its subsequent effects on health. While my previous experiences have been purely academic, I’ve joined the HIHS group to help bring about actual change, both in reducing health inequalities and educating others about them.

Inclusion health is relevant across all fields of healthcare and is currently underrepresented in our medical school curriculum. I’m excited to get involved with this society to learn more about inclusion health in practice, and to engage with it within our local community.
